Character Name: Midna
Series: Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Gender: Female
Age: Early twenties
Species: Twili. The race roughly corresponds to Hylians, which are humans, more or less. Currently she's trapped in the form of an imp.
Appearance: Midna as she currently appears is two and a half feet tall, with wide hips and a rounded belly. Her feet are small, and her fingers end in claws. Her eyes are yellow, with orange-red irises and black pupils. Her hair is orange, shading to yellow at the tips, and she usually wears it in a ponytail high on the back of her head. Midna has a wide face and a round chin, and long, pointed ears that stick out from her head. Her forehead, ears and the area around her eyes are black, as if she is wearing a mask, contrasting with the white lower half of her face. Midna's skin is white like paper or snow. Blackness/shadow that covers her skin functions as clothing; a black collar stands up against and curls away from her neck. The shadows cover both of her arms and her breasts, leaving the area between her beasts and her belly bare. It covers her entire left leg and curls around the bottom of her belly to cover the inside of her right leg. In back, the shadows cover only her shoulderblades and her left buttock, with small curls of shadow up the right side of her back and on her left buttock. Green lines outline all of her fingers and both arms have jagged green lines starting in small bullseyes at the elbow and ending in triangles on the backs of her hands. A green line encircles her right calf, and there is a green bullseye on either side of her leg. Her left thigh has another green design of nested squares on the front and the back, with lines connecting the squares in the front and the back. As well, both of her ears are accented with angular green designs that point towards the tips.
Personality: On the surface, Midna comes off as snarky and sarcastic, and doesn't seem to take circumstances as seriously as they might merit at first. Despite this, she has a great deal of compassion for others, and is willing to help other people when they're in serious trouble. She has a strong sense of responsibility that comes from her own experiences as the ruler of her people, and therefore her greatest regret was that in a moment of crisis, she was unable to protect either her people or herself from their enemies. She prefers a peaceful lifestyle but is in no way averse to fighting hard against those who attack her or the people that she cares about. Midna is intelligent and observant of the world around her, but she tends to judge by looks or the surface personalities of people at first, and finds herself surprised when they display behaviors she wouldn't have expected of them. She also shows some concern over her own appearance; while it doesn't usually bother her, she worries that people won't take her seriously given her imp body. While she's nicer than she used to be, Midna can be a bit harsh in her teasing of people, and strongly dislikes someone who she sees as shirking their responsibilities to others. She doesn't hesitate to be rude to those people she dislikes, either. At times, Midna overestimates her own abilities to handle situations, and can get in over her head because of her pride. Altogether, Midna is a nice, if snarky person, who suffers from her pride and from her tendency to make assumptions about people at first meeting.
History: Midna comes from the Twilight Realm, a parallel world to the main world, the World of Light, in the Zelda games. When the previous ruler of the Twilight Realm died, Midna was declared the successor and inherited the royal family's ancestral magic. Zant, who was a longtime servant of the royal family, had hoped and expected to be declared the next ruler, and after receiving power from Ganon(dorf), he attacked her with his new power and turned her into an imp. Zant followed this up by turning all the Twili people into mindless monsters bound to his will.
Crushed by her inability to protect herself and her people, Midna ran away in shame, believing that she had failed in every way. Upon seeing Link taken prisoner by Zant's minions, Midna recognized him as the hero spoken of in the legends of her people and seized on the idea of using him to gather the power of the Fused Shadows. She planned to use that power to both avenge herself and her people on Zant, and free her people from the torment that Zant had put them through. She rescued Link and led him to Zelda's tower, only to taunt the princess. In Zelda, Midna saw reflected another failure like her own. As she reviled herself and felt shame for what she had allowed to happen to her people, so she mocked Zelda for her failure to protect her land and people from Zant. Midna believed that at least /she/ was doing something to change things, unlike Zelda who could only hide in a tower prison.
At the time, Midna didn't particularly care about the World of Light. She felt no particular sympathy for them and did not consider their plight. Midna offered Link her help in rescuing his friends only if he did what she told him to, and only if he helped her collect the Fused Shadows she needed. At first, she treated him with disdain, but the longer she was with Link, the more he confused her. Seeing Link's selflessness and utter willingness to help anyone in need brought Midna close to a change of heart, but it wasn't until Zant encountered them and mortally wounded Midna that her attitude changed. Midna urged Link to go to Zelda so Zelda could help him with the aftereffects of the battle with Zant, but instead, Zelda gave her own life to save Midna.
Afterwards, Midna became a new person. She took upon herself the responsibilities for caring for Zelda's people as well, and was determined to stop Zant and find a way to save Zelda and the World of Light in addition to her own people. She traveled with Link to try to find a way into the Twilight World so that they could face Zant in battle. As well, Midna started to worry about other people, look to other people's health and happiness. Seeing the harmful effects of the Twilight Mirror on the people in the World of Light, Midna started to consider the idea that perhaps it was not for the best that the World of Light and the Twilight World were connected. Upon returning home, Midna's first focus was returning her people to their normal selves, and she assisted Link in finding the objects that would allow her people to return to normal. However, she hid from her people, not wanting them to see her powerless imp form and preferring to return after defeating Zant and freeing her people for good. Midna attacked Zant with the power of the Fused Shadows she and Link had collected and was stunned at the sheer power that it gave her, giving her another reason to plan to keep the realms apart after the crisis was over and sealing her decision to sever the connection between the worlds. Unfortunately, after defeating Zant, Midna and Link discovered that only by defeating Ganondorf would they be able to kill Zant and free both the World of Light and the Twilight Realm.
Midna and Link then went to fight Ganondorf. During the battle, they restored Zelda to life, but Ganondorf attacked again. Midna used her powers to send Link and Zelda to safety and faced Ganondorf by herself, but he defeated her easily and nearly killed her. It is at this point in the canon from which Midna is taken.
Extra notes: Midna will probably start out fairly distressed, given the point at which she was taken from her timeline. It will be a strong incentive for her to work with everyone and try to find a way home, however.
Cambot post sample:
[Cambot is looking over Midna's shoulder as she pages through a book. The frame is jostled and goes wild for a moment, and then Cambot's entire field is filled with orange. It slowly pulls out to a wider shot, until Midna's face fills the frame. Midna picks up a hand to tap at Cambot, but the camera jumps back before she can touch it. Midna makes an inquisitive sound and tips her head to the side, then sighs and turns back to the book. She holds it up for Cambot to look at, and it becomes evident that she's holding it upside down. The first upside down sentence reads, "¡ʎǝʞuoɯ pıdnʇs...sǝɯıʇ ɟo ʇsɹn1q ǝɥʇ sɐʍ ʇı 'sǝɯıʇ ɟo ʇsǝq ǝɥʇ sɐʍ ʇı"]
Does this floor just give you things you can't read? If anyone wants to come down and help me sort this out, I think I'll be here for a while.
Third-person log sample:
Midna headed onto Deck 5 and looked around. This deck was different from the last one, though there were still tables here. These tables didn't look as if they were for eating on, however, they were too tall for that. Too tall to be useful for her, too, unless she found something to stand on. She hunted around until she found a small stool that she could stand on, and carried the stool over to a box that had poles with colored handles sticking out of the sides. Once she got up on the stool, she could see that the box held some sort of ball game. She fiddled with one of the handles, making the little soldier inside kick the ball, and frowned when the ball bounced off another row of figures.
"Hmph. I guess I need to find someone to play it with. How sad is that, playing a game by yourself?" Midna shook her head and hopped down off the stool, heading away from the box to examine the rest of the room. It brought back memories of some of the temples she'd been in, actually, with the large open areas and seemingly randomly placed fences and barriers. It didn't seem as if anything here was intended to be deadly, though. Not on this deck. Midna had her doubts about some of the other decks; she hadn't understood exactly what Deck 7 was all about, but apparently it was some form of subtle torture, Deck 9 was a dangerous place and Deck 12 was totally forbidden. Upon consideration, she had to add Decks 2 and 3 to the subtle torture list as well, given the bathroom situation there. And Deck 4 was apparently usually fine, but not always.
Though Deck 1 was where the crazy people talked to them. They reminded her of Zant; you could see the instability in their eyes in most cases, and it made it pretty clear how with it they weren't.
Riff sample:
Irene signaled for a latte with one hand and fingered her long blonde hair with the other twisting it again and again until it spiraled like a golden staircase leading to the top of her head. When the pain started, she wept, expostulating "I don't know what I'll do without Henry. He was the center of the world."
Midna: He can't have been that great if you have to twist your hair until it hurts so you can cry about him.
"Even the center of the world has to die sometime." Margaret sat sideways in her chair, her breasts a pair of protruding Alps.
Midna: Does that mean they're craggy and rocky with snow on them? Or is one in France and the other in Italy?
"He didn't seem like the kind of man who died," Irene said. "Sometimes, when were in bed, making love, at the very edge of the surf where the waves washed over us again and again,
Midna: That doesn't sound like a good place for a bed. How do you get any sleep? Do you have to wake up before the tide comes in so you don't drown?
I looked at his face and saw something there that not even all the forces of erosion could ever wash away. He was a determined man, and in his position he had to be: and I knew that, too, looking up at him wanting only for him to be there forever. He was old, you know: he was around in the seventies and everything. But there was an agelessness to him, a beautiful eternal foreverness that shone from him like the light from a lighthouse, or like the sunlight from the sun. He made me feel like a child again, and I wanted to stay in bed with him, feeling him warm my world, cooled by the waves that washed over us, until the stars went out.
Midna: Is the sun eternal or not? Make up your mind.
That what I expected anyway. That's what he promised. And now he's dead. His heart's stopped."
